Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is an interesting story to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat casino, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 table games. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel complex that highlights a number of conveniences on top of the casino, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
